Learner of the Month April 2026
Meet our Learner of the Month for April 2026. Through her Youth Support Worker Apprenticeship, Amanda has developed greater confidence, practical youth work skills and the ability to better support young people and families in her role.
Our Learner of the Month for April 2026 is Amanda McHattie, who works at Kent County Council and is currently completing the Youth Support Worker Apprenticeship.
Amanda works as a Family Practitioner supporting young people aged 11 to 19, working closely with families to provide guidance, support and early intervention.
Why Amanda chose a Youth Support Worker Apprenticeship
Amanda chose the Youth Support Worker Apprenticeship when she moved into a role working with an older age group, having previously built her experience in early years.
She saw the apprenticeship as the right opportunity to build her knowledge and confidence in supporting young people and families within this new setting.
“The opportunity came as I started the role and it just felt like the right thing to do to gain knowledge and support the young people and families I was working with.”
Building confidence and practical skills
One of the biggest impacts of the apprenticeship for Amanda has been the growth in confidence in her role.
Through the programme, she has developed the skills and knowledge needed to work more independently with young people, rather than relying on others for guidance.
“The main thing is the growth in confidence. I can now meet with young people and use my own skills, rather than relying on others.”
The ability to tailor learning through optional units such as trauma-informed practice, referral and signposting, and supporting independence has also been key. These areas directly link to her day-to-day responsibilities, making the apprenticeship highly relevant and practical.
Applying learning in youth work practice
Amanda highlights how the apprenticeship has supported her in developing a more confident and personalised approach to her work.
By combining her previous early years experience with new knowledge gained through the youth support worker apprenticeship, she has been able to strengthen her practice and better support young people across a wider age range.
“There wasn’t anything in the apprenticeship that I didn’t get something from.”
Looking ahead
Looking ahead, Amanda plans to continue developing in her role, building on her experience working across the 0-19 age range and continuing to support young people and families to thrive.
She is particularly focused on continuing to grow in confidence, build strong relationships and make a positive impact in the lives of the young people she supports.
When asked what advice she would give to others considering an apprenticeship, Amanda is clear:
“Definitely go for it 100%.”
