How to Develop Freight and Logistics Skills for Career Progression

Freight Apprenticeship Success Story: Building Confidence and Skills from Scratch
Apprenticeships are becoming one of the most effective ways for logistics employers to develop skilled, confident professionals. But beyond the strategy, it’s the individual learner journeys that show the real impact.
Edward Hodgson, now working in freight export operations at Alliance Shipping, recently completed his Level 3 International Freight Forwarding apprenticeship with a distinction across all elements of his end-point assessment.
His journey highlights how apprenticeships support learners to build confidence, develop skills and progress into real roles.
Starting with No Experience and a Desire to Grow
Before starting his apprenticeship, Edward had no prior experience in the logistics industry.
His main goal was simple: to build confidence and gain knowledge in a completely new area.
“I had no prior knowledge of this industry. I wanted to challenge myself, build confidence and gain as many new skills as possible.”
For many learners entering freight and logistics, this is a common starting point. Apprenticeships provide a structured way to learn from scratch while gaining real workplace experience.
Overcoming Challenges with the Right Support
At the beginning of his journey, Edward also faced additional challenges, including a learning difficulty, which impacted his confidence.
However, the support he received throughout the programme made a significant difference.
“The support I received from my tutor was amazing. They were always willing to go out of their way to help, with regular meetings and support for my revision.”
Combined with encouragement from his employer, this consistent support helped him stay on track, complete his assignments and prepare for his final assessments.
This highlights a key strength of apprenticeships: they are designed to support learners with different starting points and learning needs.
Progressing into Independence and Responsibility
Around six months into the programme, Edward began to notice a clear shift in his progress.
“I started working more independently, taking on more responsibility and learning more about documentation and invoicing.”
This transition from supported learning to independent working is a critical stage in apprenticeship development.
It not only builds technical knowledge but also develops confidence, accountability and real job capability.
Building Confidence and Workplace Skills
One of the most significant changes Edward experienced was in his confidence.
He became more comfortable communicating, more organised in his work and more consistent in managing his time.
These skills are essential in freight and logistics roles, where attention to detail, communication and efficiency are key.
Achieving a Distinction and Exceeding Expectations
Despite initial self-doubt, Edward achieved a distinction across all components of his apprenticeship.
“I surprised myself. I didn’t expect to get a distinction, so that made me really proud.”
His achievement shows how apprenticeships can unlock potential, even for learners who may not feel confident at the start.
Why Freight Apprenticeships Work
Edward’s journey reflects why more logistics employers are investing in apprenticeships.
They help to:
Develop talent with no prior experience
Support learners with different needs and challenges
Build both technical skills and confidence
Enable progression into independent job roles
In a sector facing ongoing recruitment challenges, apprenticeships offer a practical and sustainable way to build future talent.
Thinking About Starting an Apprenticeship?
For anyone unsure about taking the first step, Edward’s advice is simple:
“Just go for it. You learn so many skills, and you’re supported the whole way. You don’t need to know everything at the start.”
This is what a successful apprenticeship looks like.
Not just gaining a qualification, but building confidence, developing skills and progressing into a meaningful career.
