Apprentice Spotlight: Sam Lawless is completing the International Freight Forwarding Specialist Apprenticeship while working at De Georgio Transport (UK) Ltd, gaining practical experience in a fast-paced, international logistics environment.
What he did not expect was how much the apprenticeship would broaden his confidence, expose him to different working cultures, and open up new opportunities for growth.
Starting the Journey: Choosing a Practical Path into Logistics
Sam knew he wanted a career path that was practical, hands-on and rooted in real workplace experience. Rather than taking a purely academic route, he was looking for an opportunity that would allow him to earn, learn and develop within a live working environment.
The International Freight Forwarding Specialist Apprenticeship offered exactly that. Through the programme, Sam has been able to build industry knowledge while gaining day-to-day experience within a fast-paced logistics business.

Learning Through Experience: Workshops and Cultural Exposure
One of the highlights of Sam’s freight forwarding apprenticeship journey has been the opportunity to learn alongside other apprentices and take part in interactive workshops. These sessions have helped him share experiences, build confidence and develop a broader understanding of the freight forwarding sector.
Working for an Italian-based company has also given Sam valuable exposure to different working cultures. A standout experience was travelling to Italy for a company reunion, where he met colleagues from across the business and gained insight into how international teams collaborate.

Building Confidence: Developing in the Workplace
As Sam has progressed through his freight forwarding apprenticeship, his confidence in the workplace has continued to grow. The combination of structured learning and practical application has enabled him to feel more comfortable taking on new tasks and supporting different areas of the business.
He has found that the apprenticeship has helped him better understand his role, approach tasks with more assurance, and plan his work more effectively.

As a role model for others considering an apprenticeship, Sam’s advice is both practical and thoughtful.
He encourages future apprentices to research apprenticeship courses carefully to ensure they align with personal goals and career aspirations. Once on programme, Sam highlights the importance of effective time management.
“Plan things out, use a calendar and set deadlines. It really helps you stay on track and manage your workload.
