Learner of the Month December

Apprentice Spotlight: When Amy Taylor returned to the workplace after maternity leave, she hoped to rebuild her confidence, reconnect with her professional identity, and further develop her skills in supporting young people.

What she did not expect was how transformative her apprenticeship journey would become - both personally and professionally.

Starting the Journey: Finding the Right Path Back into Work

After maternity leave, Amy felt ready to re-engage with learning but wanted a programme that was practical, meaningful, and supportive.

The Level 3 Youth Support Worker Apprenticeship provided exactly that. She shared that the programme helped her step back into the world of youth work with renewed confidence, structure, and purpose.

“Coming back after maternity leave, I wanted something that would help me settle back into my role and develop myself. The support from my tutor Wendy really helped me regain my confidence.” – Amy

Tutor Support: A Momentous Partnership

Throughout her journey, Amy credits her tutor, Wendy, for playing a crucial part in her progress. The consistent check-ins, guidance, and encouragement helped Amy feel supported not only academically, but emotionally too.

“Wendy has been brilliant - someone I could reach out to, who reassured me I was on the right track. Her support really kept me going.”

This relationship helped Amy navigate challenges, structure her learning, and stay motivated, especially during moments of self-doubt.

A Stand-Out Moment: Leading the Middlesbrough Youth Council

One of Amy’s biggest momentous moments was facilitating a Youth Council project involving 17 young people across Middlesbrough.

The goal: to bring young people together, raise their voices, and help them influence change in their communities.

Amy delivered workshops, guided discussions, and helped the group articulate their priorities. This project became one of her proudest achievements — a tangible example of how her apprenticeship strengthened her leadership and practice.

“Seeing the young people come together, share their thoughts, and influence decisions was incredible. It really showed me just how far I’ve come.”

Career Progression: Stepping Into a Senior Role

As Amy developed through the programme, her confidence grew and so did her responsibilities.

She successfully stepped into a Senior Youth Worker role, gaining new opportunities within the Linx Youth Project team. Amy shared that the apprenticeship helped her become more reflective, more assured in her decisions, and more equipped to support both colleagues and young people.

“The apprenticeship opened doors for me. I feel much more confident in my practice and in the decisions I make every day.”

Looking Ahead: Continuing to Make a Difference

Amy’s journey doesn’t end here. She hopes to continue developing her skills, taking on more responsibilities, and helping young people thrive across the community.

Her story is a testament to what structured support, reflective practice, and high-quality training can achieve, especially in a sector as impactful as youth work.
